Frequently Asked Questions

1. What type of cuisine do you offer?

Our menu is French/Continental - we offer a wide selection of fish, seafood, meats, poultry , game & vegetarian dishes. Our menu changes seasonally ( 4 times/year).

2. Who is your chef ?

Eric Sarnow is chef as well as co-owner of the Hummingbird Room. Chef Sarnow was trained in France & worked as Sous Chef at Le Bec Fin, Philadelphia before opening the Hummingbird Room in 1993.

3. What are your hours of operation?

We are open Wednesdays through Sundays from 5pm. to midnight. Parties of 20 or more may be accommodated on other nights or afternoons by prior arrangement. Reservations are taken most nights until 9:30 pm. Penn State graduation weekends reservations are taken from 3o'clock in the afternoon. We're sorry we don't accept reservations via email. We would much rather speak with you over the phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

4. Should we make reservations ?

Reservations are Highly Recommended . Although most evenings reservations may be made until just prior to dining with us, it is recommended that reservations for Friday & Saturday nights be made at least one week in advance as we are often filled those evenings. Penn State graduation & home football weekend reservations should be made well in advance.

5. Is your building accessible ?
Our building and the first floor restroom are both wheelchair accessible. Please let us know if you wish to be seated downstairs.

6. Do you have a dress code?
No we do not, although many of our guests tend to dress more formally as we are a fine dining establishment. Jacket & tie is not mandatory for gentlemen.

7. Are you open holidays?

We are closed New Year's Day, Fourth of July, Wednesday & Thursday of Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve. & Christmas Day.

8. Are you open year-round?
We are open year-round except for our "summer vacation" at the beginning of March. Please call for exact dates.

9. Do you have a children's menu ?

We do not have a children's menu, although our regular menu can be modified. Because we are a fine dining establishment , the pace may be too slow for smaller children. We do not offer high chairs or booster seats.

10. Do you have vegetarian items on your menu ?

We offer a variety of vegetarian appetizers & entrees, which change seasonally along with our regular menu.

11. Do you have a liquor license ?

We obtained a full liquor license in May 1999. We offer full bar service as well as an extensive wine list.

12. May we still bring our own wine ?

Our liquor liability insurance prohibits us from allowing guests to bring their own alcoholic beverages.

13. Do you have non-smoking dining rooms ?

All of our dining rooms are non-smoking. We have an enclosed porch on the second floor for our patrons who smoke.

14. Do you accept credit cards ?

We accept Visa, MC & Discover credit cards as well as cash or personal check for payment.

15. Do you offer gift certificates ?

Gift certificates for any amount may be arranged for over the phone with a credit card or may be picked up in person.

16. Do you host private parties ?

Our 1847 manor home has six different dining rooms which can accommodate groups of varying sizes. Our largest dining room will hold up to 40. Parties of greater than 12 cannot be accommodated on Saturday evenings unless special prior arrangements have been made. Menus are available for groups upon request.

*We have one dining room that accommodates a single table for six to eight guests. Please call in advance to request "Evan's Room."

17. Do you have wedding/rehearsal dinner facilities ?
Our 1847 historic register home is ideal for small rehearsal dinners of up to 40 guests. We are able to host Saturday or Sunday afternoon parties with seating for up to 85. ( maximum of 40 in one dining room). Parties for Saturday night are limited to groups of 12.

18. May we bring our own cakes for special occasions ?

We have our own pastry staff & offer a wide range of elegant homemade desserts. Please call in advance to make arrangements for special desserts. We respectfully request that you refrain from bringing your own food to our establishment.
